(EX) What can cause an explosion?

An explosion can only occur when flammable material (e.g. gas or dust), oxygen (e.g. from air) and an ignition source come together. Electrical and mechanical devices can be an ignition source and hence these must be protected if they are to be used in explosive atmospheres.
